IESO is responsible for grid management (including SCADA and EMS), ancillary services (including AGC and voltage support), support systems (including forecasting and outage tracking), and communication systems that create the means by which electricity producers and consumers are brought together to form the wholesale market for electricity in Ontario. The DDMS application is a core part of the operational technology that forms the heart of the market. It is a collection of tools that interact with the Dispatch Schedule Optimizer (DSO), providing management support as well as critical scheduling information that feeds the DSO‘s market solutions.

The Independent Electricity System Operator balances the supply of and demand for electricity in Ontario and then directs its flow across the province's transmission lines.
The (IESO) works at the heart of Ontario's power system, connecting all participants — generators that produce electricity, transmitters that send it across the province, retailers that buy and sell it, industries and businesses that use it in large quantities, and local distribution companies that deliver it to people's homes.
Every five minutes, the IESO forecasts consumption throughout the province and collects the best offers from generators to provide the required amount of electricity.
